Welcome to the
Centre of Research Excellence
for
Coronary Artery Disease
Path to zero heart attacks
Established in 2020, the Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) for Better Outcomes in Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in Australia actively supports innovative cardiovascular research and nationally harmonised clinics.
Funded by a generous five-year grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), we bring together leading researchers, clinicians, and global communities to address the urgent need for evidence-based approaches that improve health outcomes for CAD patients. We aim to collaborate and tackle the challenges of CAD, advancing knowledge and enhancing patient care.
Our Mission
One Australian suffers a heart attack every nine minutes. Despite a common perception that coronary artery disease (CAD) is well understood and managed, it remains the leading killer of Australians and millions across the globe. Major advances have been made in the identification and treatment of modifiable risk factors for CAD in the community. However, patients still present with extensive blockage of their arteries and life-threatening heart attack without adequate explanation and find themselves asking “Why me?”.
Our Initiatives
Novel insights and preventative strategies for CAD
Our research initiative is dedicated to studying CAD progresses in patients with few traditional risk factors. We want to improve the way we detect the early signs of CAD in those at risk. We also aim to develop better treatment approaches for CAD patients who experience heart attacks despite having minimal risk factors. By using advanced technologies and analysing biological data, we hope to uncover new insights into the causes of CAD and the risk of heart attacks. Ultimately, our research will lead to improved methods for diagnosing, treating, and managing CAD.
Capacity building
We are committed to not only uncovering new findings but also ensuring their practical application in healthcare. This includes exploring opportunities for commercialisation, where applicable, to bring innovative solutions to market and benefit a wider population. Additionally, we prioritise the development of future leaders in our field through the EMCR (Early- and Mid-Career Researcher) development program. By providing support and mentorship to emerging talent, we aim to cultivate a new generation of researchers who will drive advancements in CAD research and healthcare, ensuring sustained progress and positive outcomes for years to come.
Collaboration
We actively engage key stakeholders, including patient consumers, to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs are addressed. Our multidisciplinary team comprises researchers, clinicians, industry experts, health economists, and clinical trialists who work together synergistically. By fostering collaboration among these diverse perspectives, we aim to promote the effective transfer of research outcomes into health practice, resulting in tangible improvements in patient care. Additionally, we are proud to have established the national BioHEART cardiology biobank open access resource, , fostering knowledge sharing and driving advancements in the field of cardiovascular health.
