The BioHEART Study
The BioHEART Study is a large multi-centre study that aims to find new blood-based markers for cardiovascular disease (CAD) and detect the disease before life-threatening events like heart attacks occur. By providing a blood sample, whether you're a healthy volunteer or someone affected by cardiovascular disease, you can help researchers analyse thousands of samples collected from people across Australia. ​The BioHEART Cohort includes two main subgroups:
BioHEART-CT
A stable community group undergoing CT coronary angiography, including people with no or little CAD.
BioHEART-MI
Patients presenting acutely with ST elevation myocardial infarction (MI)
By combining information from these samples with imaging data from CT coronary angiograms, the study aims to identify new markers that explain why some individuals develop cardiovascular disease while others do not. Advanced technologies like genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and artificial intelligence will be used to analyse the data. The findings can lead to improved screening tools for early detection, prevention, and better treatment of cardiovascular disease. Your participation can make a significant impact in discovering biomarkers and saving lives.

Who is eligible?
People aged 18 years and over, presenting with cardiac disorders (or for investigation of suspected cardiac disorder) including:

Acute myocardial infarction

Suspected coronary artery disease
-
Patients undergoing cardiothoracic or vascular surgery, or plastic surgery involving resection of vascularised tissue.
What does participation involve?
Your participation is voluntary and requires a small blood collection. You will be followed-up with an outcomes questionnaire by either telephone, paper questionnaire, emailed questionnaire at 30 days, and then annually for the life of the project.
